01 · Overview

The standard
grab for free-flowing
bulk materials.

The clamshell grab is the correct tool wherever the material is granular, lump or free-flowing — grain, coal, ore, sand, aggregates, fertiliser and similar bulk commodities. The twin-shell geometry closes cleanly on granular material, retaining it with minimal spillage and achieving high volumetric efficiency per cycle.

Fluidline clamshell grabs are hydraulically actuated and designed to interface with the hydraulic circuit of the crane they are used with. Shells are fabricated in heavy structural steel with replaceable wear lip inserts at the cutting edge, extending service life without requiring shell replacement. Hinge bearings are sealed against material ingress for reliable long-term performance in dusty bulk handling environments.

We engineer clamshell grabs to your crane capacity, material density and required throughput. Shell geometry — opening radius, shell depth and cutting edge profile — is optimised for the specific material to maximise fill factor and minimise cycle time.

03 · Key Features

Designed for
high-cycle
bulk handling.

Feature 01

Replaceable Wear Lips

Hardened wear lip inserts at the cutting edge are bolted and replaceable without shell replacement. Significantly extends service life in abrasive bulk materials such as ore and aggregate.

Feature 02

Sealed Bearings

Hinge pin bearings are sealed against material ingress and fitted with grease nipples for periodic lubrication. Prevents premature bearing failure in dusty and wet operating environments.

Feature 03

Optimised Shell Geometry

Shell depth, opening radius and cutting edge profile are engineered for your specific material to maximise fill factor — the ratio of actual fill to rated capacity — reducing cycles per tonne.

Feature 04

Hydraulic or Rope Operation

Available in hydraulically actuated configuration for cranes with hydraulic circuits, or rope-operated configuration for wire rope cranes without hydraulic capability. Both types in our range.

Feature 05

Custom Crane Interface

Top beam and suspension geometry engineered to your crane's hook size, lifting arrangement and headroom clearance. We accommodate single hook, double hook and rope drum configurations.

Feature 06

Complete Assembly

Supplied complete with hose set, swivel joint and connection hardware. Hydraulic pressure tested before dispatch and accompanied by test certificate and dimensional report.

05 · Applications

Industries that
run clamshell
grabs daily.

Wherever free-flowing bulk material needs to be moved from stockpile to hopper, ship hold to conveyor, or yard to bin, a clamshell grab is the tool of choice. Key applications:

Grain Handling Coal Handling Iron Ore Sand & Aggregate Fertiliser Ports & Jetties Power Plants Cement Plants Steel Plants Quarries Salt Handling
06 · Why Fluidline

Why engineers
specify Fluidline grabs.

Reason 01

Material-Specific Engineering

Shell geometry is optimised for your material's bulk density and flowability. The result is a higher fill factor and fewer cycles per tonne — directly reducing operating cost and crane wear.

Reason 02

Spares in Stock

Cylinder seal kits, wear lip inserts and hinge pin sets are stocked for every grab we manufacture. You are never waiting weeks for a part that should be available the next day.

Reason 03

ISO-Certified Quality

Every clamshell grab is fabricated, assembled and hydraulic pressure tested under our ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. Test certificate accompanies every unit dispatched.

07 · FAQ

Frequently
asked questions.

Can I use a clamshell grab for irregular scrap?
Clamshell grabs are designed for free-flowing bulk materials such as grain, sand, coal, ore and aggregate. For irregular scrap and demolition material, an orange peel grab is the correct tool — the multi-tine geometry penetrates and retains irregular pieces far more effectively than twin shells. We can advise on the right grab type for your specific material once you share the details.
What sealing options do you offer for grain dust applications?
For grain, flour and fine dust applications we fit sealed lip seals to the shell hinge bearings and close-fitting shell profiles to minimise spillage at the parting line. We can also seal the hinge pin bearings against ingress of fine particles. For food-grade applications, we discuss material and coating requirements with the customer before fabrication.
What is your typical lead time for a clamshell grab?
Standard clamshell grabs in common capacities (1 to 4 m³) typically ship within 4 to 6 weeks from order confirmation and drawing approval. Larger custom grabs and those requiring special materials or surface treatment may require 8 to 10 weeks. Confirmed lead time is provided after design sign-off.
Are spare parts readily available for your clamshell grabs?
Yes. We stock cylinder seal kits, hinge pin sets and wear lip inserts for every clamshell grab we manufacture. Spare parts are dispatched within 24 to 48 hours for standard items. For customers with multiple grabs in service, we recommend holding a basic spares kit on site — we can specify the recommended kit at the time of supply.
Do you offer trial units or demonstrations?
We do not operate a hire fleet, but we are happy to arrange a site demonstration using a reference unit where one is available nearby. For new customers uncertain about the right grab specification, we recommend starting with a detailed application discussion with our engineering team — this invariably identifies the right size and configuration before any commitment is made.
What bulk materials are clamshell grabs suited to?
Clamshell grabs are the standard choice for free-flowing granular and lump bulk materials: grain, wheat, rice, coal, iron ore, sand, aggregates, crushed stone, fertiliser, salt and similar materials. The twin-shell design closes cleanly on granular material and retains it with minimal spillage. For sticky or cohesive materials such as wet clay, the shell geometry may need to be modified — contact us to discuss.
