Contamination — particulate, water and air — is responsible for more than 70% of hydraulic system failures. Correct filtration, matched to the system pressure, flow rate and cleanliness target of the most sensitive component, is the single most cost-effective maintenance investment in any hydraulic installation.

Because Fluidline designs and builds complete hydraulic power packs and systems, we approach filter selection with real application knowledge. We know which micron rating a servo valve circuit demands, where in the circuit the filter must be placed for maximum protection, and what bypass valve rating is appropriate for the system pressure. We supply filter housings and replacement elements that are actually correct for the system — not just the cheapest item on a distributor shelf.

We supply suction strainers, return line filters, pressure line filters and off-line kidney-loop filters, along with replacement elements in all standard micron grades. OEM-equivalent elements for Parker, Hydac, Mahle and Internormen housings are available.

Common
questions.

What micron rating do I need for my hydraulic system?
The correct micron rating depends on the most sensitive component in your circuit. Servo valves and proportional valves require 3–5 µm filtration. Directional and pressure control valves typically need 10 µm. Gear pumps and motors can tolerate 25 µm in the return line. As a general rule, filter to the most sensitive component. We advise on the target ISO 4406 cleanliness class and select filters to achieve it reliably.
How often should hydraulic filters be changed?
Most return line and pressure filters should be changed when the differential pressure indicator signals — typically at 3.5–6 bar across the element. In a clean system this may be every 1,000–2,000 hours of operation. Suction strainers should be cleaned annually or more frequently in contaminated environments. We recommend monitoring via indicator rather than fixed time intervals, as contamination load varies with operating conditions.
Can you supply OEM-equivalent replacement filter elements?
Yes. We supply replacement filter elements compatible with most major filter housings including Parker, Hydac, Mahle, Internormen and Rexroth. OEM-equivalent elements use the same filter media grade, bypass valve rating and seal dimensions. Cross-reference the housing model number or element part number with our sales team and we will identify the correct compatible element.
How do I calculate the pressure drop across a hydraulic filter?
Pressure drop across a filter element is a function of flow rate, fluid viscosity and the element's clean differential pressure rating. Filter manufacturers publish delta-P vs flow curves for each element. For suction filters, pressure drop must be kept below 0.1 bar to avoid pump cavitation. Return line filters typically tolerate up to 5–6 bar across the element before the bypass valve opens. Share your flow rate and operating viscosity and we will confirm the correct element size.
What types of differential pressure indicators are available?
We supply filters with visual pop-up indicators (manual reset), visual with electrical switch (for remote alarm wiring), and differential pressure gauges. For unmanned or remote installations, an electrical switch wired to a PLC or SCADA alarm is strongly recommended. Indicators are rated to the filter's bypass valve pressure setting and are interchangeable across most filter housings.
What is beta ratio and why does it matter?
Beta ratio (β) is a standardised measure of a filter element's particle removal efficiency at a given particle size. β10 ≥ 200 means the filter removes at least 99.5% of particles 10 µm and larger in a single pass. A higher beta ratio indicates more efficient filtration. For servo and proportional valve protection, specify elements with β3 ≥ 200 or β5 ≥ 200. We specify beta ratio alongside micron rating when sizing filtration for sensitive hydraulic systems.
