The orange peel grab is the standard tool for handling steel scrap, demolition debris, slag and other irregular bulk materials where a clamshell cannot achieve sufficient penetration or retention. The multi-tine geometry wraps around irregular material and holds it securely through the crane cycle, reducing spillage and maximising each lift.

Fluidline orange peel grabs are designed in-house and fabricated entirely at our Kundli facility. Tines are manufactured from Hardox 400 or 500 wear-resistant steel for long service life in abrasive and high-impact applications. The hydraulic cylinder and rotator assembly is sized to the grab capacity to ensure consistent opening and closing force throughout the working range of the tines.

Every grab is supplied complete with the hydraulic rotator, swivel joint and hose set, and tested on our hydraulic rig before dispatch. We offer custom capacity, tine geometry and crane interface to match your specific crane and application requirements.

How do I size the tine count for my scrap application?
Tine count is determined by material geometry and density. For heavy steel scrap and demolition debris, a 4-tine or 5-tine grab gives better penetration. For lighter mixed scrap and smaller pieces, a 6-tine configuration increases retention. Our engineering team will recommend the right tine count once you share your material type, crane capacity and cycle time requirement.
What is the difference between Hardox tines and cast tines?
Hardox 400 and 500 tines are fabricated from wear-resistant steel plate, giving excellent impact resistance and field-repairability — damaged sections can be cut out and replaced without scrapping the entire tine. Cast tines offer good wear resistance for homogeneous materials but are heavier and difficult to repair in the field. We use Hardox construction as standard for our orange peel grabs in scrap handling applications.
What is the typical cycle time for an orange peel grab?
Opening and closing time for a standard orange peel grab is 8 to 12 seconds depending on cylinder bore and hydraulic flow rate. Full cycle time including crane travel depends on your crane speed and working radius, but the grab actuation itself is within this range. We can optimise valve sizing to achieve faster cycles where throughput is critical.
Do you supply the hydraulic rotator and hose set with the grab?
Yes. We supply the complete grab assembly including the hydraulic rotator, swivel joint, hose set and connection hardware. The rotator allows 360° continuous rotation so the operator can orient the grab precisely over the pile without repositioning the crane. Hose sets are rated to the system working pressure and supplied with end fittings matched to your crane's hydraulic circuit.
Can I retrofit a Fluidline orange peel grab to my existing crane?
In most cases, yes. We need the crane's hook capacity, hydraulic circuit pressure and flow rate, and the current headroom clearance. We then design the grab to stay within the crane's safe working load including the grab's own weight. Where the existing hydraulic circuit is inadequate, we can specify a dedicated power pack. Contact our engineering team with your crane details and we will advise on compatibility.
What materials can an orange peel grab handle?
Orange peel grabs are suited to irregular and mixed bulk materials including heavy steel scrap, cast iron, demolition debris, slag, loose rock and mixed construction waste. They are not recommended for free-flowing granular materials like grain or sand — a clamshell grab is more appropriate for those applications. We can advise on the best grab type for your specific material.
